Valeggio sul Mincio is a typical Italian village…ancient stone buildings and castles, cobbled streets, farms, all along a river running through the area. Quaint, pretty, historic…and famous for a few reasons, the charming Borghetto sul Mincio, a UNESCO world heritage site…and tortellini! Yes, Valeggio is a capital of the most delicious tortellini you will ever taste.
And, we are fortunate to be friends with the owner of Pastificio Remelli…the one place in Valeggio where tortellini are still made by hand, without any automation! We often take our cyclists to Remelli’s place after a relaxing ride through the Morenic Hills.
And, if we get there early enough, we are treated to a private tour where 20 ladies of the village come to make fresh tortellini daily. It’s amazing to watch their fast and skilled hands artfully wrap the pasta into perfect morsels…classically stuffed with pumpkin or meat or locally made cheese. Remelli takes pride in using only the freshest, best ingredients.
Set in a medieval building near the center of town, Remelli is not only a hand made tortellini factory, but also a restaurant and a store. On our visit, we sit in a stone-walled room from ancient times, to try a tasting plate of tortellini. The unique flavors and texture of home-made/hand-made pasta will burst in your mouth. But the menu is full of other delicacies as well, and the sight of the huge open fire pit is sure to get your mouth watering for nicely grilled local meats.
On the way out, stop by the store where you can purchase not only home-made tortellini, but mustards, jams, cakes and biscuits, produced on site, or as part of the slow food movement from all parts of Italy. You have not tasted true Tortellini until you have tried Remelli!
